Choosing Plants

How Many Do You Need?
Try to put a minimum of 3 (5-7 if space allows) in a naturalized group, or drift. A triangular formation works well. Drifts of plants make color effects stronger and give planned plant associations greater impact. If you are lucky enough to have a large garden with wide borders that you can view from a distance, you will require larger drifts of 5, 7, or even 11-of-a-kind to get the impact you wish. Remember, there are no straight lines in nature, so only plant in a line if you want to achieve a formal or more classical result.

How Much Will They Spread?
When planting, keep in mind the spread of your plants, leaving room for them to expand over the next 2-3 years. For example, Crambe cordifolia may muscle out over 6 feet, while a Geranium dalmaticum clumps discretely over 8-10 inches. You may compromise on distances with some plants, if you are willing to move things about a little over the years, or to divide a little more frequently.
