Description
Trillium albidum, the sweet trillium, has large sessile white flowers that are mildly fragrant. The leaves are green and can be mottled with brownish or dark green spots. This species is rarely available and makes an elegant addition to the shade garden, especially planted in drifts. T. albidum is a western US species that is a near-native to BC whose range gets as close as southwestern Washingon. Trillium are exquisite plants for the shade garden blooming in early to mid spring with their elegant flowers. They are spring ephemerals that may go dormant by summer. Keep in mind that they may go dormant early in the year they are first planted and could sulk a bit in their second year – and even not show themselves at all for a season! – before settling in for beautiful displays for years to come.
