Description
Scadoxus membranaceus (syn. Haemanthus) is the smallest species of the genus and sometimes called paintbrush or snake lily. It is a beautiful and intriguing bulb with clusters of golden anthers held on red filaments surrounded by burgundy red to green bracts on stems up to about one foot high. The decorative red berries can remain on the plant for up to two months. The broad, rippled, light green leaves emerge with the flowers. Use as a pot specimen with excellent drainage placed in the part shade to part sun garden and bring inside for the winter. Keep dry when dormant. Our nursery-grown bulbs are adult blooming size as of 2023.
