Description
Rosa nutkana, known as the Nootka, bristly, or wild rose, is native to western North America including BC. It typically grows as a thicket of multiple canes 4-6 feet high, sometimes taller, topped with lovely, fragrant, single flowers in shades of mid pink set off by the light yellow stamens in early summer. The attractive orange-red hips are edible but can be bitter. Popular with native bees and butterflies. It is a larval host for various butterfly and moth species including the mourning cloak and grey hairstreak butterflies. Provides habitat for nesting birds. Tolerant of sun to shade. Possibly hardier into zone 4 or even 3. Photo: Wikipedia.
