Description
Loropetalum chinense is known as Chinese witch hazel or fringe flower. It is a beautiful semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub with long-blooming, fragrant, spidery, fringed flowers in white and shades of pink. ‘Ryokko’ is a vigorous, green-leaved cultivar with spreading, graceful, arching branches. The leaves emerge with a hint of burgundy. Its hot magenta-pink flowers bloom profusely in spring and sporadically throughout the growing season. Grow in containers and protect in winter or, in coastal BC, plant in well-drained soils in a protected location. Can be popular with hummingbirds. Tolerant of dry soils once established. Chinese witch hazel (檵木 or jìmù) has a long history of use in Chinese traditional medicine.
