Description
Liatris ligulistylis is a spectacular long grass prairie native. Unlike the characteristic tight single flower spike of most blazing stars, this species, called meadow blazing star or Rocky Mountain gayfeather, has fuzzy individual flower heads held at distance from the stem and these stems can be branched into multi-spiked candelabras. The flowers are lavender-purple and thistle-like and popular with pollinators. Plants will reach 12-36 inches tall 6-24 inches wide. Plants can rebloom if cut back. Tolerant of poor soils, drought, summer heat, and humidity. A natural with grasses such as Panicum and Calamagrostis. Native to the three Canadian prairie provinces.
