Description
‘First Blush’ is a breakthrough in the hosta world from breeder Bob Solberg. It is the first burgundy-leaved plantain lily. Not only does it have red petioles (leaf stems), a red edge to the leaves, and red in the lower veins but the foliage is also flushed with burgundy across most of the leaf blade! New foliage emerges green quickly turning to burgundy. In cool summer climates like the West Coast the burgundy can remain all summer into fall. In hot summer climates the burgundy can fade to green when temperatures reach the low 30s Celsius. This is history in the making and a future direction in hosta breeding you’ll want to keep tabs on. Phoenix Perennials was one of the first nurseries in the world to offer this hosta when the prices were more than double. Now it’s within reach of most gardeners. Don’t miss it.
