Description
Gentiana septemfida var. lagodechiana is a crested gentian from the Caucasus mountains. Masses of amazingly bright blue upright trumpet-shaped flowers often with a touch of purple cover the plant in mid to late summer on 8 inch tall stems. Some stems are upright, others are prostrate with the last few inches of stem upturned to clear the ground creating a nice mat-forming clump up to 15 inches wide. Plant in full sun to part shade. Avoid full sun in hot summer climates. This gentian is one of the easiest to grow and tolerates a wide range of soils and exposures. Plants appreciate gritty, well-drained, peaty, acidic soil. Good for rock, cottage and informal gardens, borders and beds, near pathways where it can be appreciated, in special containers, and as a small scale ground cover. Attracts hummingbirds and pollinators.
