Description
Diospyros virginiana Prairie Sun ‘Claypool A-33’ is an early-ripening American persimmon with beautiful, orange-yellow fruit that is very sweet, firm and delicious. The Claypool cultivars are self-fertile but may produce more fruit in the presence of a male clone. The Asian persimmon, D. kaki, is one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produces small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies. Partially to fully self-fertile but will produce more fruit in the presence of a male tree.
