Description
Diospyros virginiana ‘Garretson’ produces abundant crops of large, sweet and delicious, glowing, deep orange fruit. It also offers extra striking fall colour in shades of orange and yellow. The Asian persimmons, D. kaki, are one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produces small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies. Partially to fully self-fertile but will produce more fruit in the presence of a male tree.
