Description
The monkeytail hornbeam, Carpinus fangiana, is a handsome and exotic, medium-sized tree that often branches not far from the ground. It has subtropical-looking, eight inch long, mid green leaves with prominent pleated veins that emerge burgundy in spring. The pendulous pale green catkins are up to 12 inches long and hang from the tree from spring until fall. Only recently introduced into more common cultivation, though it has been a signature at UBC Botanical Garden for many years and graces the cover of the book The Jade Garden written by some of the garden’s curators and directors. For the 2025 Rare Flowering Tree Pre-Order plants will be recently potted in 15cm pots and about 1-2 feet tall.
