Description
Brodiaea elegans, known as elegant cluster-lily, is a small bulb native to Oregon and California that blooms in late spring to midsummer with shiny, bell-shaped, violet-blue petals around white centres on strong leafless stalks 12-18 inches high. It looks similar to the BC native B. coronaria and in West Coast gardens will probably interest similar pollinators. The foliage is narrow and linear. It emerges in late winter then goes dormant as the flowers appear. Easy to grow, undemanding, drought tolerant and very adaptable to most soil types. Easily naturalizes. After blooming season, the plant will go into dormancy so no need to water until the following spring. Virtually disease and pest free. Plant en masse for best display. Use in sunny beds and borders and in rock, cottage or meadow gardens especially planted beneath ground covers. Photo: Wikimedia.
