Solanum betaceum, tamarillo or tree tomato, a subtropical with sweet fruit popular in South America.

Solanum betaceum is a subtropical shrub or small tree from Andean regions of South America known as tamarillo where it is one of their most popular fruits. They are egg-shaped with pointed tips and can be yellowish orange, orange, red, or purplish red with orange flesh. The sweet fruit are eaten fresh or made into beverages, chutneys, jams, and desserts. The lavender flowers resemble those of potatoes. Also known as tree tomato. Grow in containers and protect from frost in winter. Plants are relatively easy to bring into flower and fruit.
