Scutellaria ovata

Scutellaria ovata or heartleaf skullcap has purple infused new growth followed by tubular purple flowers.

The foliage of this eastern North American native has a purple lustre as it emerges. As this attractive colouration fades the plant produces masses of purple flowers with white highlights. Prefers a dry, gravelly part shade but tolerant of shade and more moist soils. Popular with butterflies. Deer resistant.
