Rosa nutkana, known as the Nootka, bristly, or wild rose, is native to western North America from Alaska to California and into the Rocky Mountains. It typically grows as a thicket of multiple canes to 4-6 feet high, sometimes taller, topped with lovely, fragrant, single flowers in shades of mid pink set off by the light yellow stamens in early summer. The attractive orange-red hips are edible but can be bitter. Popular with native bees. Provides habitat for nesting birds. Tolerant of sun to shade. Possibly hardier than zone 5. Photo: Wikipedia.
