Rosa foetida ‘Bicolor’
Rosa foetida 'Bicolor' is known as the Austrian copper rose with hot red petals with yellow reverses.
Rosa foetida is a tough species known as the Austrian briar or the Persian yellow rose native to the foothills of the Caucasus mountains in Georgia. True to its name, it has a light scent that not everyone enjoys but some find pleasant! It was introduced in Europe in the 16th century and is the source of yellow in our modern hybrids. ‘Bicolor’ is known as the Austrian copper rose. It is a beautiful selection with hot red petals with yellow reverses around yellow stamens. Though Rosa foetida only blooms once each season it will form a dramatic display on 6-8 foot arching stems then contribute to a nice green background at the back of the border. Or use as a thick, suckering hedge. Hardy to zone 4 and performs very well in cold climates.
