Ribes ‘Black Velvet’ is a black gooseberry with large crops of delicious, high quality, purple-black to burgundy-black fruit that have an almost blueberry-like flavour. Plants are vigorous and disease resistant. It is a hybrid of R. uva-crispa and R. hirtellum. Gooseberries are highly nutritious and are particularly high in vitamin A and phosphorus. They can be used in desserts or eaten fresh to enjoy their sweet/tart flavour. They are self-fertile and extremely hardy, at least to zone 3.
