Punica granatum ‘Desertnyi’

Punica granatum 'Desertnyi' has dark red arils with an excellent sweet-tart flavour with a hint of citrus and soft, edible seeds.

Punica granatum ‘Desertnyi’ comes from Turkmenistan. The dark red arils have an excellent sweet-tart flavour with a hint of citrus. Seeds are very soft and edible. The gorgeous orange-red blooms provide a subtropical look. This is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that grows up to 10 feet but is easy to keep smaller by pruning. Pomegranates require lots of sun and heat to bloom and fruit. They are self fertile and leaf out in late spring.
