Osmunda regalis is a magnificent, large, stately fern with light green foliage that gives a tropical look to the garden with fronds up to four feet long. ‘Purpurascens’ is the most striking form with new purple stems and burgundy new growth that eventually fade to green as the huge leaves expand. Older specimens develop mounded trunks up to 1-1.5 feet high. Great for a shaded garden and moist to average soils. Herbaceous. Possibly hardy to zone 2.
