Magnolia cylindrica Marilyn’s Choice

Magnolia cylindrica Marilyn's Choice has fragrant white blooms with rosy-pink bases and red cylindrical fruits on columnar trees.

Magnolia cylindrica, the cylindrical magnolia, is a native of China. The selection, Marilyn’s Choice, is a tightly columnar form perfect for narrow or small spaces that will reach about 20 feet tall. The creamy white, fragrant, lily-like flowers are up to three inches wide with flares of rose-pink at the base that emerge in great numbers before leafing out. Even young trees produce flowers. The flowers are followed by four inch long cylindrical fruits maturing to bright red as they split open to reveal red seeds in the fall. The foliage is long and dark green with hints of bronze and pubescence underneath turning to yellow in fall. The bark is smooth and grey. Appreciates consistent moisture. Cultivar name: ‘Mjk-mc1’. For the 2024 Rare Flowering Tree Pre-Order plants will be in 1g pots and about 2 feet tall.
