Gentiana makinoi ‘Royal Blue’
Gentiana makinoi 'Royal Blue' has tubular, true royal blue flowers on tall stems to about three and a half feet high.
Gentiana makinoi hails from the mountains of Japan and will rise to about three and a half feet with erect stems topped with clusters of true blue, upright two inch long flowers at the tips and in the upper leaf axils. The flowers do not seem to open completely but remain as fat elongated buds. An easy garden perennial happiest in a peaty acidic soil. Though somewhat slow growing, ‘Royal Blue’ makes a dramatic display in late summer and is a great cut flower.
