Fragaria vesca, known as wild or alpine strawberry, is a North American native. It has attractive, bright green leaves comprised of three toothed leaflets, classic white flowers with yellow centres, and small, very tasty, red, edible fruits. The flower and fruiting 9 inch tall stems, rise well above its clumping foliage. Propagation is by runners and seed dispersal by birds. Plant en masse as an edible ground cover in the woodland garden, informal borders, in containers, a replacement for turf or as a green mulch in gardens.
