Fargesia robusta

Fargesia robusta is a clumping, tall and robust bamboo with culms that create a checkerboard effect.

Fargesias robusta boasts a taller, more upright and robust form than other bamboo in this genus. Foliage is shiny with deep olive-green leaves. New shoots are hairy and earthy-red upon emergence in spring with a smaller second flush in late summer. The culm sheaths fade from light green to a light creamy-white providing a dramatic, checkerboard look in spring to early summer. Prefers protection from hot afternoon sun. Matures to 15 feet. Use for privacy and screening. All members of the genus Fargesia are clumpers and do not produce running rhizomes.
