Diospyros virginiana 'Szukis' has an attractive and naturally compact habit producing early-ripening, large, sweet, tasty persimmons.

Diospyros virginiana ‘Szukis’ is one of the best American persimmons for small spaces and containers with an attractive and naturally compact habit. It produces good crops of early-ripening, large, sweet, tasty fruit. The Asian persimmons, D. kaki, are one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produces small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies. Partially to fully self-fertile but will produce more fruit in the presence of a male tree.
