Cylindropuntia (Opuntia) ‘Golden Lion’

Cylindropuntia (syn. Opuntia) 'Golden Lion' is a natural hybrid cholla covered in golden spines with pea green flowers.

Cylindropuntia (syn. Opuntia) ‘Golden Lion’ is a naturally occurring hybrid between C. davisii and C. kleinii found in the Davis Mountains of western Texas. It grows as a short, branching, cholla-like shrub to about three feet tall covered in golden spines. The flowers are pea green aging to yellow. Hardy to zone 5, possibly colder. On the West Coast, provide sharp winter drainage and protection from winter rain — scree gardens or under overhangs of the house both work well. Elsewhere they can be planted out in the open but always in sharp drainage.
