Cylindropuntia (syn. Opuntia) acanthocarpa ‘Hi Ho Silver’ is a spectacular selection of the buckhorn tree cholla with glistening, silver-white spines that make a stunning display especially when backlit by early morning or late evening light. The upright branching stems are about two inches wide. Flowers are edible and red. Plants can reach 4-5 feet tall. Hardy to about zone 6b. On the West Coast, provide sharp winter drainage and protection from winter rain — scree gardens or under overhangs of the house both work well. Elsewhere they can be planted out in the open but always in sharp drainage.
