Clematis viticella ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’ is a lovely oddball cultivar with fully double, two inch wide pom poms in shades of muted magenta and dusty rose. The flowers are produced in great numbers over a long period and each opens slowly blooming for up to three weeks. Can grow to 10-12 feet high. It is a member of the Viticella Group which were the first clematis grown in English gardens beginning in the 1500s. They bloom from July to September and are hardy to zone 3. Tolerant of part shade. Pruning group C – hard prune in early spring to about one foot from the ground.
