Citrus reticulata (syn. Citrus unshiu) ‘Okitsu Wase’ is a hardy mandarin that can withstand temperatures to about -7 degrees Celsius, perhaps colder once established and full size. Indeed there have been various reports of greater hardiness. While not quite as hardy as the ‘Owari’ mandarin, ‘Okitsu Wase’ represents an additional option for outdoor growing in a protected location or for a plant that needs much less winter protection than other citrus. The incredibly early-ripening fruit are one of the best tasting of all mandarins and the most popular cultivar sold in Japan with thin, easy-to-peel skin and juicy, aromatic pulp. All of our citrus are grafted onto C-35 citrange, trifoliate orange, or other semi-dwarfing rootstock which confer good hardiness and production while reducing overall tree size.
