Callirhoe involucrata

Callirhoe involucrata is an extremely showy, midwestern US native with luscious, glowing, magenta flowers with white centres.

Callirhoe involucrata produces luscious, glowing, magenta flowers with white centres. It is an extremely showy native from the midwestern US. Superficially you might think it’s a hardy geranium but despite the similar deeply cut leaves, closer inspection of the flowers will reveal that it is a mallow. Wine cups or purple poppy mallow has a sprawling nature with ground-hugging stems. It looks best spilling over a wall or weaving through other perennials. Infertile and well-drained soil is best in full sun. Blooms all summer. Deer resistant. Usually listed as zone 4 but likely hardy in zone 3 with good drainage.
