Brunsvigia marginata is a fiery species with dramatic tight umbels of 10-20 scarlet red flowers with long stamens tipped in white that resemble Nerine. The flowers bloom at about eight inches high in fall to early winter. The bulbs are about six centimetres across and produce four elliptical, leathery, tongue-like leaves 6-9 inches long and up to four inches wide with red edges. The leaves appear after flowering, grow through winter and spring and go dormant in summer. Keep on the dry side when dormant in summer perhaps watering only once a month. Plant the large bulbs with the neck protruding above the soil. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It’s perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 5 years old as of 2022 and will reach blooming size at about 10 years old. Until then the foliage will be amazing.
