Anemia tomentosa
An unusual fern with fertile fronds resembling flower spikes.
The Hairy flowering fern is unusual in bearing two types of fronds, the sterile and fertile. The fertile and sterile fronds look similar, except the fertile fronds produce long, alien, antennae-like “flower” stalks from spring to fall that are home to the developing spores. Plant it in a dry pocket in Zone 8 (with protection). They are most often seen growing amongst rock and rubble, this giving them the drainage they need. They respond well to a good watering in the summer as they are coming into growth.
