Agave stricta var. rubra

Agave stricta var. rubra, the red hedgehog agave, has long, narrow foliage that turns red with stress.

Agave stricta var. rubra, known as the red hedgehog agave, is a fascinating variety with long, narrow, stiff, quill-like leaves forming an impressive textural sphere 1-2 feet across. Under good conditions plants have green to grey-green foliage but with stress from heat, sun, or cold the foliage can develop bold colours of red. There can also be variation from seedling to seedling with some plants becoming more red than others.
