The Clematis Conundrum

So many Clematis and Passionflowers, so little time! And space!
Choose from 90 different Clematis and 8 different passionflower!

No garden or patio is complete without the Queen of the Vines. But how do you select between the best cultivars? How do you find the one clematis you’ve been looking for for years? Or maybe you want to discover a cultivar you never knew you needed until now! It can be a real CONUNDRUM! And then we have amazing hardy (and non-hardy) passionflowers. That’s a whole new dilemma!

Clematis Conundrum Pre-Order 2020

The other problem is that few nurseries could ever carry more than a fraction of the hundreds of types of Clematis at any one time. At Phoenix Perennials we have created the Clematis Conundrum Pre-Order to bring together a huge selection of the best and most unique Clematis available for pick-up at the nursery or shipping in late April 2020! Now you can find that perfect clematis (or passionflower) all in one place and with ease!

Peruse our selection below, make notes on which plants you’d like and, when you’re ready, click on the link to place your order. You might want to right click the link and open the order page in a new window so you can view this image page and the order page side by side. Have fun!

Pick-Up: We estimate pick-up will be in late April. We will email everyone to confirm the exact date.

Canadian Mail Order Customers: These Clematis and passionflowers will not be offered on our official mail order site in 2020. If you would like to place an order, please do so here with a minimum $40 in plants. Orders are shipped as soon as they are ready. If you have ordered other plants and they are ready at the same time, we will ship together. However, if your other plants are not ready we cannot hold your Clematis to wait for your other plants.

Our pre-orders are open to local and mail order customers and are administered in a separate system from our mail order site which cannot quote exact shipping rates. Note that all of these plants are in 1 or 2 gallon pots on three foot stakes or trellises. We usually cut the stake down by half and wrap the vine around itself for shipping. This decreases the box volume required but fairly large boxes can still be required to ship vines and this does cost money to move them hundreds or thousands of kilometres. We expect a shipment of 1-3 vines would cost about $30-$50 depending on how many plants you choose and how far you are from BC. Quite distant or very rural locations will cost at the upper end of the scale. Orders greater than 3 plants would cost incrementally more as weight and box sizes increase – each additional vine would probably cost around $4-$7 more to ship. We do our best to try to keep shipping costs as low as possible. We do not make money on shipping and charge only to cover our costs.

In order to streamline the shipping process for the upcoming season, all mail order customers will be asked to provide full address information and a shipping deposit of $50. Once your plants have shipped, we will either refund the remainder of your deposit if the shipping is less or send you a PayPal money request if the shipping is more which you can pay with a credit card or PayPal account. We expect that in most cases we will be refunding a portion of your deposit.

The Raymond Evison Collection

Sadly, we have recently been informed that this is the last year that our grower will be offering the Raymond Evison Collection. Should there be cultivars you really want, this is the year to get them.

Raymond Evison is England’s King of the Clematis and currently the world’s most famous clematis breeder. His cultivars are among the best ever produced with huge flowers, unique colours, and long and repeat blooming.

Boulevard Series – Compact cultivars perfect for containers, patios, and small spaces.
Patio and Garden Series – Classic medium to large-growing clematis for the garden to grow on walls, archways, trellises, pergolas and into shrubs and trees.
Regal Series – Ornate double flowers perfect for containers or the garden.
Miniature Series – Dwarf plants with multiple stems to just 20 cm (8 in.) long covered in masses of flowers. Use them in containers, hanging baskets, groundcovers or accents at the front of the border.

Passionflowers

Passiflora are the subtropical sisters of the Clematis. Most are not that hardy but P. incarnata is hardy to zone 5! Most of the rest of our selection are hardy to zone 8, especially if you bury their stems 4-6 inches deep when planting. P. vitifolia is hardy only to zone 10 but how can you resist a red passionflower? Where passionflowers are not hardy, they are relatively easy to store and overwinter. Some people bring them in as a house plant. Others store them in a low light situation where they can be kept above freezing. These are tough vines that will sit dormant over the winter and then flush back out in spring.
